Kaunas Zoo

The Kaunas zoo was established in 1938. On opening day there were only 40 exhibits.
These were animals that were given as presents to biology Professor Tadas Ivanauskas from other zoos. Within one year the number of the zoo’s exhibits grew to 150. In 1958 the Kaunas zoo was given the name of the Republic of Lithuania Zoological Garden. The Lithuanian zoo took root in a 15.9 ha park, in which grow hundred year old oaks in the city’s centre. It is made up of 11 sections and employs 130 workers. By size and number of animals it can be equated to a mid-sized European zoo.
The zoo offers 6 classes of animals. Insects – 17 types, fish – 58 types, amphibians – 4 types, reptiles – 35 types, birds – 73 types, mammals – 85 types. In all there are 272 types of animals, 2,877 total. This tally changes frequently and every year the number varies.
You can ride a pony or donkey in the zoo, or take a ride in a carriage. You can have direct contact with the tame llamas, who are frequent guests during the city’s celebrations.
