The Kaunas castle on Papilio Street is a reminder of old Lithuania, mentioned for the first time in 1361. There is very little information about the earlier castle.
In the very centre of the city is Vienybės aikštė (Solidarity Square) with its graceful sculpture of Freedom, an original memorial to the Independence of Lithuania.
This unique implement of transportation was built in 1935. All of its authentic fixtures have remained: the pulling mechanism, the pre-war cars, wooden benches and station houses. The funicular takes people up to Aleksotas Hill.
