Churches
Today the church towers among Klaipeda Old Town buildings can be seen only in old postcards. Prayer houses destroyed during World War II have not been reconstructed because of the changed ideology (Lithuania was occupied by the Soviets). Thus unlike other cities, the main square of Klaipeda is decorated not by a church or a town hall but rather by a theatre.
Most of the people who came to Klaipeda after the war are Roman Catholics. Masses are held at Mary Queen of Peace Church decorated with frescoes painted by Klaipeda artists. In Bokštų Street, there is the 1851 Evangelic Reformist Church which was given to Roman Catholics after World War II and called the Christ the King’s Church. The Catholics who live in the new parts of the city come to worship at St Joseph’s and St Casimir’s Churches which have not been completed yet. These Churches are examples of modern architecture.
The Russian Orthodox believers worship at a Church in Liepų Street. The Church was established in the place of Lutheran cemetery chapel. Soon a new Russian Orthodox Church will be opened in Smiltelės Street.
Lutherans, one of the oldest confessions in Klaipeda, worship in the old returned building on John’s hill. Anglican worships are held here as well. Baptist and Evangelic Reformist parishes can be found in the Church in Vytauto Street.
